This easy side-dish tastes much better than the boxed variety. It goes especially well with chicken!

Ingredients

  • 1 box / 1 lb penne rigate, cooked 1 minute before al dente

  • 4 tbsp butter

  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

  • 3 tbsp flour

  • 1-1/2 cups chicken broth

  • 1-1/2 cups milk

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, minced

  • 3/4 tsp salt

  • fresh cracked black pepper, to taste

  • 1/2 tsp chicken bullion

  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1/4 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 2/3 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese + extra for serving

Directions

  • Melt butter and add garlic in a medium sauce pan.
  • Cook over medium heat for 1 minute.
  • Add flour and cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  • Stir in broth and milk, and cook stirring frequently until sauce boils and thickens.
  • Add in all spices.
  • Add in 2/3 cup parmesan cheese, until melted.
  • Toss cooked pasta with sauce and let simmer over low heat, stirring frequently until pasta is well coated with sauce.
  • Garnish with more freshly grated parmesan cheese if desired, enjoy!

Notes

  • The sauce will look thin when it’s added to the pasta but will thicken nicely while it simmers over low heat for a few minutes. The pasta will absorb the sauce.
  • I always use lactose-free milk, it turns out wonderful!
  • I like to make better than shake n’ bake with this! They go really well together.
